Global Education Practicum

Complete your teaching rounds in a Malaysian school!

The dream only turns into reality when you begin to trust yourself...

Are you ready to make a life changing commitment? To practice your teaching style in an international environment that will challenge you and hone your skills? Set yourself apart in the employability stakes?

The GEP is your ticket to answer all of these objectives! Complete your teaching rounds in one of Asia's most diverse and dynamic destinations. Contrast and compare teaching styles and pedagogies with your peers from across Australia as you embark on the 3-week journey of self-discovery and improvement!

You will be allocated to a host school with a local mentor and will be supervised by accompanying academics from participating universities while The Global Student (TGS) takes care of all other program needs - orientation and welcome, accommodation and 24 hour emergency support.

How it works

Your practicum experience meets the requirements of your home institution and the Australian state-based accreditation bodies. The program is designed to ensure you maximise learning opportunities and gain valuable experience in a different culture, but also to make sure you have some fun!

The program includes:
    • a compulsory pre-departure briefing prior to departure
    • an orientation program that includes a Race around KL/Kuching City
    • a day of cultural engagement and activities with Malaysian PST’s from a local teacher training institute
    • ongoing feedback sessions during your program
    • two professional development evenings delivered by accompanying academics
    • optional weekend activities
    • farewell and debrief

During the school week you are expected to engage in all aspects of your host school program including meetings, sports days and any extra-curricular activities.

Weekends are free, with many PSTs receiving invitations to join their mentors to meet their family or for festive occasions, including family weddings!

Logistics

It all begins with your arrival in the program location on the Friday immediately before the program begins. You will be required to complete a travel details form (located below) and you will receive advice via this page on how to make your way to the accommodation. Your accommodation is twin-share in a hotel.

You will make your own way to school and back each day with fellow PSTs, a minimum of 2 and maximum of 4 per school. This might be via public transport or via ride-share companies.

The national school day begins between 7.15 and 7.30am depending on the school and usually finish by 12.30 – 1.00pm. This requires an early start with TGS negotiating a light breakfast at the hotel from 6am.

For Taylors International School you must arrive by 7.45am and school finishes at 3.45.
